E-Health Apps
As smartphone usage becomes ubiquitous, the emphasis on individual health increases, and medications become more complex, mobile health apps have gained popularity in recent years. A review (Kong et al.) on smartphone mobile applications for skin cancer detection found that since 2014, there has been a steady increase in the number of apps available to the general public to support the prevention or early detection of skin cancer. In 2019, the most common functionality offered was the monitoring/tracking of lesions, at 48.5%. However, there continues to be a high turnover of apps, and many still lack clinician input and/or evidence regarding their safety and value.
These apps have been divided into five categories: automated analysis apps, educational apps for clinicians, educational apps for the general public, teledermatology store-and-forward apps, and tracking and reminder apps. However, since many apps belong to more than one category, for simplicity, we have placed them in the category based on the primary information they provide.
